Controversy trail Obaseki’s failure to inaugurate 7th Edo assembly…

The fight between Edo state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki and the National chairman of the APC over the latter’s second term bid is getting messier.

As almost a week after the expiration of the 6th Edo state assembly, the governor has refused to send a proclamation letter to the clerk.

Worried by the trend , the PDP and 19 of the 24 APC members-elect on Monday condemned Governor Obaseki’s refusal to send the official proclamation letter to the Clerk for the inauguration of the 7th Edo state Assembly.

However the State Chairman of APC, Barr. Anslem Ojezua, said there was no cause for alarm as the assembly would soon be inaugurated as the party has agreed on the composition of the Assembly leadership.

“I don’t see any constitutional crisis, because, we met only yesterday and we have agreed as a party on how the leadership of the Assembly should be constituted.

“I expect that Mr. Governor will issue the proclamation any time now. But I don’t see any constitutional crisis at all. As you can see, everything is moving smoothly.

In a statement, the State PDP chairman, Chief Dan Orbih said, “What is playing out today in Edo State is that the executive arm led by Governor Godwin Obaseki has clearly and illegally stopped the legislature from performing it’s constitutional role”.

He said, ” By his unconstitutional act, he has assumed the character of a sole administrator”.

The chairman said, his party is uncomfortable with this unfortunate development, knowing “the inherent dangers of the APC magical claim of 24 over 24″.

” As at 2pm, today, June 17, 2019, Governor Obaseki has not given any official reason for his impeachable action.

The Edo PDP condemned what it called “this assault on our democracy and calls on all lovers of Democracy to call governor Obaseki to order. Don’t gamble with the destiny of our state because of internal party disagreement and intrigues”.

The members-elect said with the expiration of the 6th assembly on 7th June, the state governor ought to have issued a letter of proclamation for their inauguration to the Clerk.

Mr Washington Osa Osifo, representing Uhumwonde constituency, said it was an error for the members-elect of the APC, in the state not to be inaugurated up till date.

He said “all other states of the federation have inaugurated their Houses of assembly, Governor Godwin Obaseki has deliberately refused to allow that of Edo state to function thus usurping the power of the legislators.

“The Governor no matter how powerful, cannot impose individuals either as speaker or deputy on the legislators. At best, he can only lobby for his preferred candidate as was recently witnessed at the national assembly”
