Edo Libya Returnees Protest Over Exclusion From Empowerment Programmes

By Thomas Osarodion

BENIN – Pandemonium struck yesterday in Benin as some Libya returnees protested during an interactive session with the Chairman, Edo State Task force against Anti-Human Trafficking and Attorney General of Edo state, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe.

The aggrieved returnees were protesting over their marginalisation and exclusion from the list of beneficiaries who were empowered in different parts of the south-south states through the Ministry of Niger Delta.

Though the atmosphere was tensed at Motel Benin Plaza at GRA venue of the event, however the imbroglio which would have degenerated into a full blown scuffle was later quelled while normalcy restored.

On his part, Mr. Emmanuel Osayande aka Benghazi while expressing displeasure over the issue said that the struggle commenced long ago. “I have been battered and oppressed because I stood with Libya returnees but at the end we were neglected”, he added.

“Let both Federal/State government recognise and integrate us into the society by empowering those that truly travelled to Libya and are back to the state”, he said.

Responding to questions, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe said several calls made by her office to returnees were not acknowledged.
