The leadership of academic staff union of university(ASUU), Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma, chapter, has advised parents to ignore the directive of one Prof. Sunny Edeko, calling students to return to campus.
AAU ASUU chairman, Dr Monday Igbafe gave the advice in an interview newsmen on Sunday in Benin.
He said Edeko, “who is the Dean of the faculty of law, AAU, is a suspended member of the union over alleged antiunion activity..
” Members of ASUU in AAU are on strike and no academic activity is currently going on here.
“But we have it on good authority and have evidence that Edoko has been sending messages to students to return to campus.
” We are asking parents to ignore and disregard such irresponsible message from a disgruntled suspended ASUU member not to put the lives of their children and wards at risk.
” it’s only the school authority that can issue notice or give directive of resumption or otherwise, once the strike is called off, not an individual lecturer.
” ASUU is concerned about the safety of our students but disturbed by the behaviour of a Professor of law who has thrown caution to the winds and is trying to risk lives of these students through misinformation, ” he said.
Igbafe noted that Edeko was also using his position as Dean to threaten and harass younger lecturers in his faculty, who were ASUU members.
.Contacted, Edoko confirmed ASUU’s claim, saying ” I am not on strike but teaching because am no longer a member of ASUU.
”It is also correct that I am asking my students to return to school as the university authority is yet to alter its academic calendar.
” I was suspended because I chose, as a law professor, to obey a court order not to go on strike called by the union sometime ago.
” Am not afraid to repeat that I am asking my students to return to school because am here ready to teach,’ he said
